Granted to Abraham Lafavour on July 30, 1795
Assignee of John W. Duncan, who was assignee of Nicholas Stearn

88 acres in Washington County, VA on a fork of Bakers Creek, branch of Thompsons Creek, the waters of the middle fork of Holstein River

Certificate in Right of Settlement

Survey Date: June 5, 1782

Beginning at a
black oak [H. Baker's survey gives the following landmark: "red oak on a ridge," suggesting that the point on Baker's survey does not match the point on Lafavour's survey - see more below]
on a high ridge
above Bakers corner [why is this worded "above Bakers corner", rather than "on Bakers corner", if the Lafavour line is to be "on, and with his (Baker's) line"?]
and on, and with his line
S 60° E 92 poles [The equivalent line on Humphrey Baker's survey of April 9, 1753 is N 69° W (which would be the same as S 69° E for Lafavour's survey) 82 poles. Therefore, there is a difference of 9 degrees and 10 poles between the two tract descriptions. The 29 year period between the Lafavour and Baker surveys may account for the differences. There may have been some adjustments to the Baker tract lines during the 29 year period that I have not discovered.]
to a hickory sapling
S 40° E 30 poles [The equivalent line on Humphrey Baker's survey is N 30° W 210 poles. The line lengths do not match because Lafavour's line stops much short of Baker's and then follows the Buchanan line. But there is a substantial difference of 10 degrees between the two lines.]
to a white oak and mulberry
a corner of Robert and Joseph Buchanan
and with their line
N 40° E 158 poles [matches R. & J. Buchanan's line]
to 2 white oaks and 2 black oaks [matches R. & J. Buchanan's description, but theirs adds "on south side of Walkers Mountain]
N 35° W 56 poles [no adjoining tract, only Walkers Mountain]
to a chestnut oak
on a spur of Walkers Mountain
and from thence
S 59° W 194 poles [have not determined if there is an adjoining tract here]
to the beginning
