Granted to Robert Cleghorn on November 21, 1791

Assignee of Thomas Bates

270 acres in Washington County, VA on both sides of Bakers Creek a branch of the middle fork of Holstein River

Certificate in Right of Settlement

Survey Date: July 31, 1789

Beginning at
2 white oaks
corner to James Thompsons land
and with a line thereof
S 65° W 76 poles
[this line is a near match to an earlier survey of adjoining land of Conrod Henneger, S 68° W 78 poles, Henneger was neighbor to south of Cleghorn ]
to 3 white oaks
near Hinnegars field
with a line of his land
N 45° W 84 poles [near match to Conrod Henneger's line, N 50° W 88 poles, - this is clearly supposed to be a shared line between Henneger and Cleghorn, even though the angles are 5 degrees different and the length of the line is 88 poles vs. 84 poles, the differences likely due to an adjustment by the later survey]
to 3 black oaks [matches Conrod Henneger's survey]
on the top of a ridge [Conrod Henneger's survey is "on a ridge"]
N 80° W 84 poles [Henneger's is N 78° W 98 poles, shorter length of Cleghorn's suggests that his line does not match Henneger's in length, but rather stops short and then leaves Henneger's line]
to a large white oak [Henneger's survey is "to black oak," confirming that Cleghorn's line stops short of Henneger's]
corner to Carlocks land [an examination of my map reveals that this is not a corner to Karlocks tract, unless of course there was a later adjustment to Karlock's tract that I have not found]
and with the lines thereof
N 43 ° E 42 poles [I have not found an adjacent tract that shares this line]
to a white oak
N 70° E 26 poles [Conrod Karlock's line, S 55° W 36 poles (equivalent to N 55° E 36 poles), appears to be the same line, but Cleghorn's survey of 1789 appears to have adjusted the angle by 15° and length by 10 poles, the Karlock survey was done in 1782]
to a poplar and a white oak sapling
N 43° E 32 poles [matches Conrod Karlock line]
to a white oak
by a branch and the pasture fence
N 38° E 44 poles [angle matches Conrod Karlock line, but his line is 46 poles, and was surveyed in 1782, suggesting that an adjustment was made between the time of the two surveys, 1782 and 1789]
to 3 white oaks
N 29° W 52 poles [angle matches Conrod Karlock, but his line is 56 poles]
to a white oak
N 10° W 82 poles [angle matches Conrod Karlock line, but his line is 90 poles, ]
to a white oak
above the meeting house
N 45° E 20 poles [ I have not located an adjacent tract to this line]
to 2 small white oaks
corner to said Thompsons land
and with the line thereof
N 71° E 160 poles [This may be a shared line with a remaining portion of James Thompson's old patent tract - I don't have survey data for Thompson's tract]
to a stake
S 82 poles [This may be a shared line with a remaining portion of James Thompson's old patent tract]
to between 3 white oak saplings
S 31° W 178 poles [This may be a shared line with a remaining portion of James Thompson's old patent tract]
to a white oak, red oak and 2 soarel trees
S 11° E 120 poles [This may be a shared line with a remaining portion of James Thompson's old patent tract]
to the beginning
