Allen was one of the early family names of this region. O'Dell provides some information on this family that is helpful in understanding the dynamics of land ownership during the 18th century.

Pioneers of Old Frederick County Virginia by Cecil O'Dell, 1995

Benjamin Allen (born about 1690) purchased 900 acres located on Conowingo Creek and Octoraro Creek (branches of the Susquehanna River) in northwestern Cecil County, Maryland from Ephraim Herrman and his wife Isabella for 120 pounds on 28 November 1714. Benjamin sold the northern half of the 900-acre tract (450 acres) to Reuben Allen for 60 pounds on 13 January 1719/20.

Benjamin was in Orange County, Virginia in the Shenandoah Valley before 26 February 1734/35 when he had 170 acres on the "North Branch of the Shanando" River surveyed. He had an additional 120 acres surveyed on 2 March 1734/35. On 29 June 1739, he received a Patent from the Colony of Virginia for 400 acres located on the North Fork of the Shenandoah River. The south property line is located at the mouth of Mill Creek on the North Fork of Shenandoah River. The tract's southwest corner is east of and near U.S. Highway 11 and Mill Creek at Mt. Jackson [in my map this corner plots west of Hwy. 11]. Benjamin's mill, in operation by 24 February 1742/43, was located near the southwest corner on Mill Creek.

Reuben Allen, Benjamin's brother, was deceased in Orange County, Virginia by 26 November 1741 when his son Reuben Allen was appointed administrator of his father's estate. The Bond for Reuben II was guaranteed by Thomas Moore and Benjamin Allen.

Benjamin Allen was deceased by 19 February 1746/47 when Reuben Allen II was appointed administrator of Benjamin's estate with William White and Thomas Moore as sureties. As his nearest blood relative, Ralph Allen (brother of Benjamin and Reuben I) became heir-at-law to Benjamin. Ralph and his wife Amy Allen of Middletown, Newport County, Rhode Island deeded the 400-acre 1739 patent land to Reuben II in 1747.

Mary Allen, widow of Reuben I, received a Fairfax grant for 400 acres on Mill Creek on 19 January 1749/50. This tract is located about three miles west of Mt. Jackson on Virginia Highway 263 and Shenandoah County Highway 729. Mary Allen was deceased by 29 May 1751 when Jackson Allen and Joseph Allen (as administrators of her estate) presented a Bond in Augusta County Court.

Reuben Allen II (born about 1720) was deceased by 29 May 1751 when his wife Ingabo Allen presented her bond to the Augusta County Court with Cornelius Ruddle as surety. By order of the Court, 308 acres were laid off for Ingabo Skeen (widow of Reuben Allen II) on 26 November 1763. Reuben and Ingabo had at least one son, Reuben Allen III (born about 1745), who was deceased by 25 November 1779 when his will (dated 1 September 1779) was proved in Shenandoah County Court. Reuben Allen III bequeathed one-third of his land holdings to son Thomas, one-third to son Aaron and one-third to son John. He mentioned his wife Lydia and daughters Hannah Allen and Mary Allen. Thomas Allen (born about 1771) died an infant shortly after his father's death. Aaron Allen (born about 1773) married and had children. John Allen (born about 1777) married and had children. Lydia Allen, widow of Reuben Allen III, married Joseph Hawkins.

Aaron Allen (born about 1773) and his wife Dorothy sold the 400-acre 1739 patent land to Joseph Miller on 14 March 1796 [Deed Book K page 211 describes this transaction, which appears to be part of Reuben Allen's 625-acre patent, as described on north westerly side of the North River, thus not the 400-acre 1739 patent].

Jackson Allen (son of Reuben I and Mary) received a Fairfax grant for 202 acres, 2 rods located on the North River Shenandoah on 21 July 1749. The tract was adjacent southeast of Benjamin Allen's 400-acre 1739 patent land. Joseph Allen (son of Reuben I and Mary) purchased 118 acres adjacent southeast of the 1739 patent land and adjacent southwest of Jackson's 220-acre grant land from Lord Fairfax on 21 July 1749.

unable to locate any deeds for this tract

This tract has some serious errors in the survey. The South 225 poles line is clearly too long for a 50 acre tract. There may also be one or two line segments along Mill Creek that are missing in the survey data provided in the grant. Without further information, it is only possible to make a "best guess" as to the tract outline.

"From very early days Joseph Hawkins was a familiar name in this community, and it is possible that Hawkinstown was named after one of the men who bore the name of Joseph." (A History of Shenandoah County, Virginia by John W. Wayland, 1927)

Judging from the entries in the deed books, it seems most likely, rather than possible, that Hawkinstown is named after Joseph Hawkins.

Michael Henline, 372 acres, 16 DEC 1751

Not able to locate grant online at Library of Virginia, but subsequent deeds document this grant.

Survey of the tract was conducted 27 OCT 1749 and determined to be 372 acres located on Jumping Run. Adjacent tracts: John Penywite, Jacob Powesley, John Panter [Painter]. The chain carriers for the survey were Rialy More and John Panter, Daniel Holeman was present at the survey and the surveyor was George Byrne. Note that subsequent deeds list the tract at 322 acres, but the division survey resulted in two tracts of 186 acres, which supports the figure of 372 acres.

John Hough, 385 acres, 16 DEC 1788

Shenandoah County Deed Book H pages 199 and 201 - 11/12 AUG 1791 - lease and release - John Hough to Lewis Blessing, 46 acres, part of a larger tract granted to John Hough 16 DEC 1788

I believe that the John Hough of this grant was the same man as the surveyor for Shenandoah County. It appears that the balance of his grant, after selling 46 acres to Lewis Blessing, was granted to Abraham Brewbaker, 332 acres, 16 JUL 1789. John Hough's survey for 385 acres was conducted May 16, 1781. Abraham Brewbaker's survey for 332 acres was conducted November 3, 1788. However, in the latter survey there is this statement: "November 18th 1775 A survey made by one of my Deputys claimed by the assignee of Ulirick Moyres who informed me the said Ulirick Moyres had a warrant of survey for the same land which his Lordship kept up did not admit the said Moyres to any title thereto. Now at the request of Abraham Brubaker the assignee of said Moyres as I am informed I have[made the survey]. [Signed] John Hough" Thus, it appears that John Hough had to surrender his grant to Abraham Brubaker, who had a claim that preceded his claim.
