B. Irma Ann Christensen Petersen b. Marne, Shelby. Co. IA School Teacher, housewife Taught school 3 years prior to marriage (at Polk #7 1930-31 and Center Twp. #1 1931-33). Married in the "Great Depression" years. Irma had saved enough money from teaching to purchase all new furniture and a piano to furnish their new home. They have been quite active in First Baptist Church in Elk Horn (an affiliate of the Conservative Baptist Association of America). Irma has taught the Junior class and has been pianist and organist for many, many years. They are both serving on the Church Library board at present. Bought current house, remodeled, built an attached garage and paved driveway then moved in in 1971. Still very much at home there. Irma loves flowers and has a beautiful perennial flower garden, also MANY house plants - African Violets, Philodendrons, Diffenbachia and ferns. ROLAND A. PETERSEN b. Elk Horn, Shelby Co., IA Farmer, Real Estate Started farming on his father's farm (3 miles west of Elk Horn) 3 years before marriage. That was to be their first home together. In 1969 had back problems, rented farm out, and took job as secretary for the Board of Education in town. Also started as salesman for Warren Jacobsen at Elk Horn Realty which he continues today. Deacon and Church Treasurer for at least 25 years. |

1. LYNN GALEN PETERSEN b. Atlantic, Cass Co. IA Farmer, pig feeder, auto mechanic Went to rural country grade school (Clay #2). When the weather was bad we walked and in good weather we rode bicycles the 1 1/2 miles to school. Grad from Kimballton Community School high school. 53-55 worked as school bus superintendent and bus driver. In July 1955 enrolled at National Schools in Los Angeles, CA as a student in Diesel and Automotive course. Graduated July 1956 as an honor student and with perfect attendance. Worked in L. A. area as a mechanic. Nov 1956 was drafted into the U. S. Army for 2 yrs, basic training Fort Chaffee, Arkansas then rest of service in Fort Polk, LA. After temporary duty at Aberdeen Proving Grounds, MD he returned to Ft. Polk and organized and taught at an automotive tune-up and fuels systems class for the U. S. Armed Forces Institute. Also owned a sewing machine so "I was the company tailor, sewing on I.D. patches, tailoring shirts, mending holes in clothes etc. Business was good as the First Sergeant sent much business my way. Ha." After marriage (and discharge from Army) moved to West Los Angeles and worked as automobile mechanic. Fall of '61 moved to Denver, CO working with an independent repair shop and later for a large Ford Dealership in Aurora, CO, doing line mechanic work and automatic transmissions. In 1965 bought a farm 2 miles west of Rorbeck, IA, started farming and working as auto mechanic part time in Atlantic and Elk Horn for the first year. The second year rented first farm and next year rented another. Farrowing and finishing hogs and feeding cattle kept him busy. In 1968 rented Dad's farm, moved in in 1971 and purchased it in 1973. Still living there. Has traded some land with a neighbor and purchased some additional land since. Won the Soil Conservation Sweepstakes award from the Des Moines Register newspaper in 1973. For 20 years has been an Archer Oil Dealer selling oil and grease to farmers in the area. Was honored in 1973 as Big Chief Archer for selling the most oil in the company, excluding those who had won the award in previous years. Active in First Baptist Church of Elk Horn. Did some remodeling work, which left the already small home with only five rooms, including the bathroom and the porch. Started doing farm machinery painting and refinishing work for some neighbors in 1985. "Since then, this "hobby" has grown into a business that has me doing paint work for two area implement dealers and numerous other people in the Elk Horn and surrounding areas." In addition to helping Dad farm his 450+ acres, renting 180 acres of my own and painting machinery approximately 6 month of the year, I still find time to do some less pressing hobbies (above). D. EMERY L. CHRISTENSEN b. 11 March 1914 Rorbeck-Marne, Pottowattamie Co. IA Airline Pilot Buried in Forrest Lawn Cemetery, Glendale, CA Fed 4-H calves and showed them at the County and State Fair. "He is on the Burbank-Albuquerque run which is 700 miles long and takes four hours flying time. Christensen started flying five years ago and obtained his instrument rating last spring at Glendale, CA flying school. He then went to Kansas City where he, with a class of 14 took a course in the Transcontinental Western Air Training School. Out of the group he was one of four to be chosen for further work, and he was also the youngest man selected for the job out of this group. He now flies a 21 passenger Douglas D. C. 3 plane." _ He flew for the army 1 1/2 years as first officer in World War II in 1941. Later he flew Stratoliners and Constellations. As a TWA Captain he flew overseas to London and Madrid, Spain in the Constellations. On 18 November 1947 he was on a training flight for TWA (not as pilot) and as they came in for the landing the Airliner struck a ditch, went out of control, crashed and burned. ARION DALE CHRISTENSEN b. Bowman's Grove home hear Harlan, Shelby Co., IA Farmer and Accountant with Medford School District Showed calves (Shorthorns) with brother Arlo as noted above won many prizes. Took part in corn husking contests in District and State. At State picked corn that had a wind storm and it was flat. Winners were all in the opposite side of the field! First home-farm at Kirkman, Iowa. About 1951 moved to Applegate, Oregon. Shipped some of his purebred shorthorn cattle on the train from Iowa to Oregon. His brother Earl rode the train with the cattle. Arion had a dairy in Oregon for 8 yrs. Moved 2 miles to a Beef Ranch, where cattle were driven by horseback to near by mountains for the summer range. After 13 years & due to health problems moved to the city "Medford". Retired at 61 and have been traveling. They have a truck and 5th Wheel and have lived on the road for 3 years and will continue to do so until health says "no more". NORMA PAULSEN b.
