B. LYDIA IOLA SCHRAM PENNINGTON b. Newcastle, NE Librarian B.Sc. Home Economics Uni of NE Currently half time librarian at Elementary school Teaches kindergarten Sunday School class IVO PENNINGTON b. Lebanon Automobile Garage owner and repairman Is a great fixer- cars, welding, plumbing, elect. Received the highest award given to Boy Scout Leaders. Along with photography as hobby- buys and sells cameras. Iola writes I remember the year that I finished my course at Cedar Falls, a two year elementary "degree" (not a degree). My parents had gotten quite gray from worry, as it was the year of the bad times 1930. I was glad that at last I got a job. It was not so good that I could do what mother hoped we would do. Each one was to send the next one to college. Perhaps I did not have enough sense of responsibility. I got $80 a month and was required to go to summer school. After two years we were cut down to $55 a month. The price of room and board did not go down. It was a dollar a day. Uncle Harvey said I should buy myself a car, but with what money? 1 had to stay in the country and there was no chance to do anything but embroidery or such tame things. Not even a good library to go to. Who ever heard of libraries in those days! Also we had to share a room with a person who was not too much of a friend, and liked to make my life miserable. I did not even think of complaining, for did not a number of people get out of 4 years college and not even have a job? I was just grateful that I did have one. I lived in Manchester (IA) a few years and in Earlville a few years and Ruth was born while I lived there. I came to Lincoln, NE to prepare for teaching. Rowenna and I shared baby sitting in Lincoln, while I stayed at her house. I came there the day war was declared, I think, and came to Wauneta the next fall to teach 4th grade here. The next year I married Ivo. During the war I raised chickens. I was janitor of the church one year, and when it was cold I would sleep in the church to see that the stoker worked properly. Ivo worked hard and would take two weeks off for vacation each year. We did a lot of camping. Ivo is a good camper and we saw a lot of National parks. I finally went back to teaching. My first stint was two years in Trenton, Nebraska. Then I went home to Ponca and took care of Dad (after his stroke) for the school year, and Ruth went to school there. I taught one year at Culbertson (NE) and stayed at home- a year of 33 miles of glassy roads in the winter. The next year I thought to do better, and taught at Imperial, but had a nervous breakdown second semester. That was hard. Went back to school the fall of '57, finished my degree (Home Economics) and went to teach in Oxford for three years, Wallace for four. There I became their librarian after taking summer library hours. In 1955- to Venengo, 8 years then retired. During January 1986 went back to library work and have been working steady at what they call "half time work". Right now- three whole days a week. We had been living with Ruth, but just purchased a home near her, taking possession May 1, 1987. I am presently at Wauneta, on Easter vacation, bringing Ivo home to do the garden we planted today, while I go back with things for the new house. It is a 1969 mobile home, in good condition. Love to all, Iola from Joan- Aunt Iola has grown RECORD size pumpkins and she and Ivo are top notch gardeners. They also take vacations just to watch and photograph special birds all around the world. Ivo's daughter - Barbara Pennington- Barbara and Ken live with their daughters Sharon Rene, Glenda, and Carolyn in Huntington, TX where Ken is a Methodist minister. |

Gives travelogue presentations and talks to photography clubs all across the country, especially on his research and design of stereo photography equipment and techniques. Our Family - by Rowenna Schram (Richards) Erbach When Percy and I established our family in 1935 we were married in Central Methodist parsonage. We were driving a '29 Whippet roadster (which we had had painted yellow with a bit of orange trim). It was still the "great" depression. We had saved enough money for basic household items and did not feel poor, although by today's standards we were. I had earned teen age money by sewing, all daylight hours, for 50 cents a day and teaching school for $40 per month. Percy ran a watch and radio business in Ponca. Later we moved to Lincoln where he taught in the school where Lindberg took his flying lessons. When World War II came he went into war work and about that time it was discovered that he had Hodgkin's Disease. He was a very kind and understanding husband and father. After his death I decided to stay in Lincoln for that would be my only chance to afford college educations for the children. I was able to get into child care through the Board of Education and take my children with me. Later I went into private care and was Vice President of a large incorporated school. I also remarried and had a second son (David). The children each received their first degrees from the University here and gave us reasons to be proud of them. Nothing brings me more pleasure than to have our scattered family together. One thing that seems very strong in our family is travel for both business and pleasure. When I found geography and cultures fascinating I certainly would not have dreamed of travelling in 52 countries as I now have. Life has been very good to us. Our Volkswagens have helped us very much in this. from her sister - Iola Pennington You would be interested in some things about Rowenna, so here are some of them. When she was real small Donald cut her hair with a cross from ear to ear and from front to back, with a clippers Dad used to cut hair. They had to clip it all short to match so she would not look so bad. She explained to people at church, "I look like a boy but I ain't". "Ain't" was a common word at our house and when we learned at school it was not the best word to use, we punished ourselves by making us carry a pail of water, a real chore. We had to fill the "reservoir" which was at the other end of the range from the fire, and next to the oven. It was a nice water heater. She had such shining eyes, interested in everything that went on. She prided herself in reading her lessons upside down or saying from memory from a wrong book. Once she thought how ridiculous it would be if she gave a stupid answer she happened to think of, and before she realized it she had done just that thing. It was embarrassing. I remember one time she was sitting at the front of the room and she fainted and fell off the bench where they were reciting. I think I remember that she was wearing a red dress. One time it was my birthday and I had been cross with her or something. I felt as if it was my fault, really. Then when dad came home from town she brought me a gift that she had asked him to get for me. That took me down a bit. I was ashamed. Our cousins said she had a tongue that had a pivot in the middle, and ran at both ends. She was never without an answer or a remark, but I do not remember that she was a constant talker, for there was too much going on for her not to do some observing in silence. I do not know that she told you but she subsisted on wild plums one winter, at least, while going to school in Newcastle. I do not remember where she was, oh, yes, at the place half way to town that dad rented. One time the principal read the wrong grades for her and she called him to task, and he was reluctant to change. He got the wrong line, but she persisted and got it straightened out. She earned more letters from Newcastle than anyone previously, and graduated with honors. Our parents were so proud of her. We all were, and no one begrudged her a bit what she rightly earned. She noted how hard I tried to keep the floors and house clean, (impossible) and so wrote on the wall of the dining room, "Praise the lazy". That was too much for mother to stand. She earned money while at home by sewing for friends- quite a star at planning & sewing in those days when one did not have patterns. The Dickey's thought I should carry her "lunch" pail for her and not run off from her, but I could not bear the pace, and thought she could carry her own pail. Oh yes, she spoke to pretty girls "Hello, grandma" to get their goat when she was very small. She talked early. |
