Grants Q, 1785, p. 135
Granted to Joseph and Robert Buchannen on June 20, 1785
400 acres in Washington County,
VA on a branch of Bakers Creek
Survey Date: February 27, 1782
Beginning at
2 gums and dogwood
by the branch thence
S 5° E 26 poles [matches Edward and John Jameson's line for adjoining tract]
to a white oak
on a ridge
S 30° W 80 poles [angle matches E. and J. Jameson's line and Thomas Bates' line, Jameson's line of 20 poles matches northeast portion of Buchannen's line, Bates' line of 60 poles matches southwest portion of Buchannen's line]
to a black oak, dogwood and 2 white oaks
on the line of Bakers old survey
and with his lines
N 80° W 19 poles [There is no equivalent line on Humphrey Baker's survey of April 9, 1753. However, there may have been an adjustment to Baker's tract by the time of Buchannen's survey in 1782]
to a double white oak
also corner to the said old survey
N 35° W 224 poles [The equivalent line on Humphrey Baker's survey of April 9, 1753 is N 30° W 210 poles. Therefore there is a difference of 5 degrees between the two tracts for the same line. The lengths can't be compared because the northwest end of Baker's line is shared with A. Lafavour. This makes for an even greater mismatch for lengths since Buchannen's line is 224 poles and Baker's only 210 poles. See A. Lafavour survey for further discussion of the old Baker survey]
to a mulberry and white oak sapling
a corner to Nicholas Starns Survey [later owned by Abraham Lafavour]
and with his line
N 40° E 158 poles [matches A. Lafavour's line]
to 2 white oaks and a black oak
on the south side of Walkers Mountain
N 70° E 258 poles [no adjoining tract - only Walkers Mountain]
to a black oak and 2 white oaks
S 5° E 76 poles [angle matches Jameson's survey, but their line is shorter, 26 poles, occupying only the southern portion of the 76 pole length of Buchannen's line]
to a black oak, locust and chestnut sapling [Jameson's survey: "black oak, chestnut and locust"]
on the side of a bushy ridge [same description in Jameson's survey]
and from thence
S 38° W 270 poles [fair match to adjoining tract of Edward and John Jameson, their line is N 34° E 279 poles. The Jameson survey was done 3 years after the Buchannen survey and probably represents an adjustment to this shared line.]
